My First Motocross
Devil's Ridge Ultraseries MX: My 1st MX First of all, whatever Gomer says he is lying. The guy can not give directions and he can't read a flyer either. He said practice would be over at 4pm. Well, I got there at 2 (because I spent 2 hours looking for the track due to bad directions) and practiced ended at 2!!No harm done. At least I got to eat some great steak that Melton and his wife fixed.
Next morning we have another practice session but since it rained the track was muddy. I decided not to practice with the 250D but instead wait and practice with the Unlimited C/D since I was running both classes.
Practice was humbling. The Unlimited class was smaller than the 250D and they were a lot faster. I only found one guy I could hang with.
Moto 1 250D:
Gomer was supposed to race the +35 and run with us but he got a flat and they ran the +35 seperate.
I got a bad start but there was such a pileup that I ended up middle of the pack down the back straight. That didn't last long.
The track was mostly long jumps with flat landings and only a few doubles. One was 45 feet long. I tried it and cased it. Decided not to do it again in that moto.
I was not used to the aggressiveness of MX. I was going a good pace but not really pushing it. I got passed a good bit and rode with a few guys. I started to catch a guy on a 4 stroke and would have had him if I had another lap.
I would have too if I didn't get lapped.
Ended up 31 of 33 but enjoyed a large learning curve.
Moto 1 Unlimited C/D:
I rode this class just for an extra practice. I didn't even plan to run the 2nd moto and I didn't.
I got a horrible start again. On the first lap I felt my arms pump up and I found myself sitting on my fat arse way too much.
On the second lap I felt something in my eye. By the 3rd lap something clouded my left eye and I couldn't see. I jumped the double that I cased only because I didn't know where I was. I got real nervous.
I stayed with one guy most of the track but never came close to passing him. Especially with my left eye watering up.
finished last.
Moto 2 250D:
Guess what... another bad start. I went inside and there wasn't carnage so I couldn't gain too many positions.
I rode much faster and with more confidence. I double the 45footer each lap after the first (too much traffic). I fought with a few guys and they left me but I kept one guy at bay. I bobbled on some breaking bumps and he passed me and I thought he was gone.
I sat too much but on the smooth jumps I would sit on the face and stand as I crested. That helped me clear the 45 foot table top. It even feels cool.
Luckily on the 4th and 5th lap I noticed a smooth line around some breaking bumps. It was the side of the track where the doser had cut into the ground. It was off-camber and you had to be committed because you only had a few inches between the tires and the bumps.
I hit 2 sections of that perfect and caught up to the #11 who had previously passed me. On the last lap he and I were within bike lengths of each other. I crossed the finish line 1 bike length behind him and he could hear me hollering as we finished :)
Finished 27th of 33. Much better. The guys in the first moto that I couldn't catch never were a factor. I still was riding with the slow guys but it was definately a big jump over my first moto.
All in all I had a great time. It was definately a different style than a HS. There was no pacing, it was go and go faster if you could. I liked it and feel it has helped me improve on a few things. One problem in the woods is that it is hard to keep someone in sight so you end up not pushing as hard to catch someone.
I think I may do it again sometime. I won't ever race a whole series of MX but it is good for some intense training and fun.
